Yesterday, May 2, was the Met Gala. This year’s theme was Gilded Glamour. Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s 1962 dress, worn to sing happy birthday to President Kennedy. But should Kim Kardashian be able to wear her dress?

No: Marilyn Monroe’s dress represents her legacy. She grew up with a mother that was frequently confined in asylums, leading Marilyn in and out of foster homes and orphanages. She struggled with an abusive childhood and was self-made. During her lifetime, she won the Henrietta Award for Best Young Box Office Personality (1951) and World Film Favorite (1953), and a Crystal Star Award and David di Donatello Award for The Prince and the Showgirl (1958). She acted in many movies, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, ‘Niagara’, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ and ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’ being most successful. A twitter user wrote, “Marilyn came from nothing and became a movie legend and Hollywood icon. Kim Kardashian comes from a wealthy family. Her late father, Robert Kardashianian, a lawyer and businessman, leaving his children a $100 million estate in trust. The dress is a symbol of all that Monroe accomplished. Before Kim, the dress was on display at Orlando’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Marilyn should have been the last person to wear the dress. 

Yes: The dress did fit the theme of Gilded Glamour. Marilyn Monroe’s dress represents her historic acting and singing career. Kim tweeted, “I am so honored to be wearing the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in 1652 to sing “Happy birthday” to president John F. Kennedy.” Kim K thought that wearing Monroe’s dress is the most American thing. But is she worthy enough to? Kim K is one of the richest women in the world. Kim didn’t get the money out of nowhere. She has her own cosmetics company called KKW Beauty, Skims(a clothing company), and is part of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Marilyn Monroe was also very rich. She was an actress, singer, model, and comedian. Both Kim and Marilyn are iconic figures in pop culture. Although it is controversial, Kim K is worthy enough to wear Marilyn Monroe’s dress.
