Should you cancel your Netflix subscription?

S. Andrews, Staff Writer

Netflix is a streaming service that provides access to many award-winning television shows, movies, and practically any kind of television you can think of, all without the interruption of ads. Netflix is also available in many languages. Unfortunately, many people have been claiming for the past few years that Netflix isn’t worth the money spent on it. People should cancel their Netflix subscriptions because Netflix is one of the most costly streaming services available, and the quality and quantity of their material is deteriorating.

Netflix is more expensive than the majority of streaming options available today. According to Tvguide, “Hulu is the clear winner when it comes to price. With its cheapest plan clocking in a full $3/mo. less than Netflix, there’s no denying its affordability. Better yet, Hulu still offers a free trial that runs for a full month…Netflix used to hold the title for most profiles on a single account, but Hulu has since stolen the crown. You can now create up to six profiles on a single Hulu account, while Netflix maxes out at five.” This supports my claim that Netflix is more expensive than several other well-known streaming services, such as Hulu and Disney Plus. This means that you may view your favorite movies for a lower cost, and most likely for a free trial period as well, simply by using a different app. Netflix will continue to lose subscribers as long as they do not drop their prices.

Netflix has also been accused of a significant drop in the quality of its material, in addition to charging an excessive fee. According to Hastyreader, “In 2020-2021, Friends and The Office left the streaming platform, even though Netflix offered to pay $100 million per year for each show to Warner Brothers and NBC, respectively…To replenish its library, Netflix invested massively in Originals. Their first ones were critical and commercial hits, but the overall quality of Originals massively declined as Netflix produced hundreds of new shows per year.” This demonstrates that Netflix has less material available to the public and that the quality of Netflix original movies and shows isn’t as high as it could be due to a lack of funding. Netflix appears to be more concerned with quantity than quality, releasing a large number of low-quality series and movies rather than a small number of exceptionally fantastic ones.

Some may argue that Netflix has attempted to cut their costs by producing a less expensive ad-supported version of their service. In a letter to investors, Netflix’s co-chief executive, Reed Hastings, stated that the pandemic had “generated a lot of noise,” making it difficult for the firm to assess changes in membership numbers. Now, it appears that the problem is a combination of competitiveness and the number of accounts that are exchanging passwords, making it more difficult to expand the business. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently stated that the business is exploring releasing an ad-supported version of the service. This will lower the cost of a subscription plan, and it is hoped that the lower price will entice more consumers to rejoin the service. Despite the decrease in price, this does not address the underlying issue of the quality and quantity of content available on Netflix, which remains a concern. Many other streaming platforms offer world-famous movies and television shows that are not available on Netflix, as well as much of the same content without the presence of commercials.

In conclusion, Netflix subscriptions are no longer worth the money, either as new content is being added or existing content is being phased out, the content on Netflix’s platform has decreased in quality, and many popular shows and movies are no longer available on Netflix. The price is too high when compared to other streaming services, and the cost of having advertisements for a lower price is not justified. If you want to save money, you could cancel your Netflix subscription and instead subscribe to another platform, such as Disney+.  If you had to choose between lower cost for worse content and advertisements, and a higher cost for better content without advertisements, which would you choose?
