Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15, 2022
September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. If you’re Hispanic, congratulations; the next 30 days are about you and your culture. But why is it important to celebrate Hispanic culture and its heritage? How do Hispanic people feel about the month?
Spanish teacher Ms. Sibello gave an interesting point of view and an accurate description of what Hispanic Heritage Month really is. “It’s an opportunity for Latinos to show the rest of the people around us that it’s about us,” Ms. Sibello shared. She also explained how the monthly celebrations vary in Latino countries versus in the U.S. “[Hispanic Heritage Month] is kind of new because it’s not a thing we have in our countries. I mean, everyone there is Latino, and it’s nice to see, and here we can show our food and traditions.”
Ms. Sibello also says that, “It is great to see attention on Hispanic culture because people who are growing up get to see their history being celebrated and emphasized. Although the month’s celebrations aren’t as widely promoted outside of the school system locally, she still feels it helps children feel proud of their heritage and culture.”
It is incredibly important that we take pride in our culture and celebrate everything we have from it. Even if you’re not Hispanic or Latino, take the time to learn about the culture and enjoy the diversity Hispanic people bring to this country.
This weekend is La Fiesta del Pueblo, a celebration of Latin American Culture in downtown Raleigh. You can learn more at https://elpueblo.org/fiesta/
