COMMITED: Alex Fernandez to UNC Charlotte
October 31, 2022
Alex Fernandez has been one of the top runners at our school throughout his high school career. So it is definitely no surprise that he has just committed to continue his running career at UNC Charlotte.
Alex is a member of the school cross country team, indoor track team and our outdoor track team. The amount of work that he has been putting in throughout these past few years has been absolutely astounding. In the first of his three running seasons last year (Cross Country), he won MVP for the men’s team and overall Fall season MVP!
Next were the indoor and outdoor track season. He dominated both seasons, even making it all the way to states for both seasons! For indoor track states, he ran the 1600 (mile), placing 10th, the 1000 meter and 3200 meter placing 14th in both. To finish off his school year, he went to outdoor track states. He ran the 1600 (mile), placing in 12th and then the 4×800 relay and placing 13th with his team (including Ocean Yang, Jake Lominack and Advaith Cheruvu).
He has brought the Gators to victory many times throughout high school and it doesn’t seem like college is going to be any different! I got the chance to talk to Alex about his commitment:
What was your commitment process like?
“I went on an official visit this past weekend, I stayed overnight. I really liked the program, the coach and I decided that was where I wanted to be so I committed that day.”
Was Charlotte always your top choice or were there others?
“That was pretty much my top choice from the beginning of this year. Before that I didn’t really know. I did some research on schools but that’s kind of where I knew I would fit in based on my performance and how their team is looking.”
What are you most excited about for continuing your running career in college?
“I am really excited to be at UNC Charlotte because on the tour I got a glimpse of what their team was like, what the program is like. It is very similar to ours and what we have here. I’m excited to continue that into the future.”
Congratulations Alex and Go Niners!!!
