Women’s Golf Team Places 5th at States
October 31, 2022
After reaching States for the first time in team history, the Women’s golf team has placed 5th out of 10 teams in the state. After the first day of states, the team was sitting in 6th place, 5 shots behind West Forsyth but after a 2 shot improvement on the 2nd day, they pushed ahead and snatched 5th from West Forsyth.
Following the events of the first round, the girls sat at a +38, 254. The top 3 for the team Maddy Linares, Lauren Eggers and Ava Heaton all shot respectable scores at 83, 85 and 86. The team´s 4th, Eliana Kim, also put up a score of 90. But for her, the second day was a completely different story. Eliana improved her score from the first day by 9 shots, shooting a team best 81 and helping propel the team into that 5th place spot. And even though Maddy and Lauren ´s second day scores went up by a couple shots (Maddy shooting 84 and Lauren shooting 87), Eliana´s score was enough to help the team improve.
I got to talk to Eliana about how she approached the second day as opposed to the first day and what she did to help herself improve:¨I really feel like I had more confidence heading into the second day because after the first day my dad pushed me to practice after the round and try to figure out where things were going wrong and that really helped me to play better¨
I also talked Maddy and asked her what emotions she experienced on the 18th hole when she sunk about a 15 footer for a clutch par: ¨I was really happy that I was able to make it to save par especially after having to punch out of the pine straw and putting it onto the green for my 3rd shot. I was also pretty emotional because being able to make that putt on my last hole of high school golf, it was just really bittersweet.¨
The Lady Gator´s wonderful and historic season comes to an end. Though things might not have gone the way they wanted at states, nothing can take away the season that they had. Congratulations to the Women’s golf team on a great season and we can’t wait to see how you guys improve next year!
