Gators Win Crosstown Cup For Wrestling

E. Stein, Staff Writer

Wednesday night, the Gator’s Wrestling Team faced off against Person County and Cary High for the crosstown cup. Our Girls Wrestling Team made history with their first two dual team wins over Cary & Person County, scoring 35 points against Person while keeping them to just 6 and scoring 26 points against Cary, holding them to 15. The Men’s Wrestling Team beat Person 48-36 to win the night’s first match. Nearing the end of the night, the Gators were falling behind the Imps when Symon Sadler won by pin with only 7 seconds left in the 3rd period. After this match, the Gators trailed the Imps 36-33, going into the final weight class of the night. To finish out the meet, Will Estes won by pin at 182 to get the crosstown cup win for the Gators, defeating Cary for the first time ever.

I interviewed Brody Funk and Margot Nester to get their thoughts on the meet.

How do you feel you performed at last night’s meet?

Brody- “I wasn’t fully on my game, but overall, I performed well, especially considering Cary is one of the best schools for wrestling in our area.”

Margot- “I did well, I didn’t get the result I wanted but it taught me to learn from my mistakes and I want to use that experience to do better at next week’s meet.”

How do you feel the team performed at the meet?

Brody- “Amazingly, we haven’t beaten Cary in 4 years, and we finally beat them this year.”

Margot- “I think the team performed very well, and I’m very proud of the results we got because we put in the work and last night’s match just showed that.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Brody- “To keep improving my flow in the matches, such as certain moves I can use, and improving technically”

Margot- “I want to go to the states and would like to continue working hard and improving. As a team, I think we can all make states and that is a goal of ours.”
