A famous sport from England is rugby; however, it is not very common in North America. With only around 125,000 players that are registered for USA rugby today it makes it hard to find players.

Here at Green Level High School, we have 2 athletes that are dominant rugby players that I got to talk to and listened to what they had to say about their sport. The first athlete I got to talk to was Will O’Shea.

What got you into rugby and how long have you played? “My friend Zach Piepho got me into rugby when I was in 7th grade around 2018 and I have been playing for the past 6 years.”

What position do you play and what made you pick rugby? “In rugby, I play outside center and Zach got me into it since I liked football I was able to pick it up pretty fast.”

Should Green level offer this as a sport or club? “Green level should offer this as a sport or club, Broughton kinda has a team but they have a rule where 10 players on the field have to be students of the school so we could do this at Green Level which could be a club that’s associated with the school.”

The next athlete I interviewed was Zach Piepho.

What got you into rugby and how long have you played? “I got into rugby as an off-season sport from football and this is my 9th year of playing.”

What position do you play and what made you pick rugby?  “I play back and mostly just offense and all that I really do is score and pass around a bit.”

Should Green level offer this as a sport or a club? “I think for sure have it here at Green Level, but it would be hard to get a good team with how little interest the sport gets but it would be fun.

We wish the best for these rugby student-athletes of Green Level.
