Coachella 2023: Week 1 Recap

C. Ford and K. Ford

This past weekend was Week 1 of Coachella, the annual Valley Music and Art festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California from April 14th to 23rd. It was co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999 and is organized by Goldenvoice. Coachella is to showcase popular and established musical artists, emerging artists, and reunited groups.

The headliners for this year were Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean, who was most the anticipated headliner this year as this was his return to performing after a 7-year hiatus. They are followed up with additional sets from Calvin Harris, Gorillaz, Bjork, Rosalia, Eric Prydz, Burna Boy, Kali Uchis, Metro Boomin, Porter Robinson, Blondie, Becky G, boygenius, Ethel Cain, Underworld, and dozens of others.

A fan-favorite set was Metro Boomin, who had an hour-long performance and full of surprise performers such as The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Future, Diddy, Don Toliver, Mike Dean, and John Legend. The set started with an introduction voiced by Morgan Freeman, and opened up with “On Time” featuring John Legend. The set combined Metro’s newest album, HEROES & VILLAINS with some of his older work, showcasing his talent and how he was able to make seamless transitions between songs.

Lots of things go down at Coachella. Known for his visionary albums Blonde and Channel Orange, the tenacious pop-soul star performed for more than an hour on the main stage at the Coachella festival Sunday night. But after Ocean started his show almost an hour late, he was forced to cancel his show at 12:20 AM on Monday. Frank Ocean’s headlining Coachella set was not live-streamed due to curfew restrictions and fans were furious.

Not only did this happen, but Shawn Mendes and ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello were seen dancing together and spotted kissing during this Coachella reunion. A year and a half after they broke up, rumors are going around they are back together!

Many influencers from all over the internet showed up at Coachella as well. This includes Charli D’amelio and Landon Baker, Alix Earl, James Charles, Emma Chamberlain, Meredith Duxbury, and many more. Photographers captured Dixie D’amelio and Noah Beck reuniting at Coachella after they broke up around late 2021 to early 2022.

Week 2 begins on April 21st, we can’t wait to see what it has in store! Coachella is when all the influencers show out in crazy, creative outfits. Check out “Coachella Outfit Recap Week 1” on the Gators Eye website!
