This past Sunday, October 15th, the Iowa’s Women’s Basketball team played their first preseason game against Depaul. It wasn’t just any regular preseason, the team decided to play in the Football stadium the day after the football team beat the Wisconsin Badgers.
Last season Iowa went on an excellent run in the NCAA tournament, making it all the way to the championship but losing to the LSU Tigers in the end. Catlin Clark brought fame to the school for the past few seasons with her crazy shooting and her ability to score. Last season, Clark averaged 27.8 pts, 7 rebs, and 8.6 ast.
The game was interesting to say the least. They had the court set up in the left endzone. They also kept the tradition that the football team has with waving to the patients at the University’s Family and Children’s Hospital. The game helped raise $250,000 for the hospital and they also had a record breaking attendance of 55,646 with the previous record being 29,619 for the UConn and Oklahoma national championship game in 2002.
I asked Jr. Lily Silvera, who is a Iowa Hawkeye fan, what her thoughts on the game were; she said, “It was cool to see because the team wasn’t that known a few years ago and for them to do something like this is awesome.” Fans hope to see the girl’s back in the National Championship game. Tune in this season to see how far they go.
