With the 24-25 NFL season underway, many questions circulate. Will the Chiefs win their 3rd Super Bowl in a row? Will Aaron Rodgers stay healthy? There are so many things to consider for this season, but the one we are focusing on is Brandon Aubrey.
Last year, the Dallas Cowboys picked up a rookie kicker out of St Louis, Missouri but no one understood why. Aubrey only played two seasons of organized football for the Birmingham Stallions after he was let go from Bethlehem Steel FC after 1 season. This didn’t stop the Dallas Cowboys from signing Aubrey to a 3-year, 2.7 million dollar contract. Aubrey’s first season was one for the record books. He made 36 out of 38 field goals and a record-breaking 35 in a row. Aubrey would also break the record for most field goals made and the highest percentage of field goals made in a rookie season.
So the question is will Aubrey break the record for longest field goal? Aubrey’s longest career kick in a regular season is 60 yards although he kicked 66 this preseason and 66 in his most recent game against the Browns, tying the current NFL record by Justin Tucker, but the kick was called back due to a delay of game. Aubrey did however line up for a record-shattering 71-yard field goal but Head Coach Mike McCarthy pulled him off the field and decided not to go for it.
Questions arise of why, as in both of Aubrey’s 66-yarders he made them with plenty of clearance. So will Brandon Aubrey break the record this year or sometime in his career? Aubrey was interviewed after his game on Sunday 9/8/24, during which he mentioned, “At the moment I didn’t know it was the 71, I thought it was still the 66 because I thought they called a timeout not the delay of game.” He was also asked if he thought he could’ve made it to which he responded, “Well we’ll never know”.
I talked to Roshan Amin, the varsity kicker here at Green Level, and here’s what he had to say. “I think he can do it. I mean as an ex-soccer player it’s easy. In the Cleveland Browns game, he would have 100% kicked the 71-yard field goal.”
With the rest of the regular season coming fast Aubrey will have plenty of opportunities to break more records with his stellar performance in his rookie years. The question is when will he.
