The Netflix true crime series Monsters returned with a new season on September 19, 2024, focusing on the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez.
This thrilling series explores many of the sociological and psychological aspects of the brothers’ actions of murdering their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, aiming to provoke viewers to question the boundaries of guilt and victimhood.
This series portrays the lives of the Menendez brothers, exploring what led them to commit the murders, the details of the court trial, and ultimately, the jury’s final verdict, which found the brothers guilty and sentenced life without parole. Despite the defense’s claims of enduring lifelong physical and emotional abuse, this evidence was not deemed sufficient to absolve them of their sentences.
Although this series was viewed as controversial among the public due to some speculation of incorrect information, it was still a favorite of many, as it debuted atop Netflix most-watched TV list with 19.5 million views, according to Netflix.
Reese McElreath, one of these viewers, thought this show was just so captivating and intriguing, as she was drawn in by the raw emotion and depth of the material. What she enjoyed the most was witnessing the authentic bond between the brothers- their true connection and unfiltered interactions brought an incredible layer of realism to the show.
As stated by Reese McElreath, “This show enhanced the notion that the brothers should get justice and recently within this week we’ve seen that they will get a new trial. I think this just goes to show the impact the show had on not only its viewers but genuine legislation and the judicial process. I think you find a lot of sympathy in the characters because you get insight as to how horrific their childhood was.”
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, emerged as a powerful and impactful series, resonating deeply with the audience and leaving a lasting mark on public consciousness. It not only captivated viewers, but also challenged society to reevaluate the complexities of this case.
