The holiday season is quickly approaching and Halloween has officially come to an end. Beginning November 1, stores have put fall stock on clearance and have begun to break out the Christmas decorations. Artists are releasing new Christmas music and Mariah Carey officially announced that she is “defrosted.” Although these new developments may encourage people to indulge in the holiday spirit, some choose to refuse this joy until after Thanksgiving. This raises the ultimate question: does the holiday season start on November 1 or after Thanksgiving?
Most people would argue that the holiday season begins after Thanksgiving, otherwise, there would be no time to be grateful. They enjoy taking the time to savor Thanksgiving before jumping into Christmas. 93% of Americans celebrate Christmas, making the holiday a very big deal. Freshman, Stella Peppin celebrates Christmas and other holidays with her family. She opposes the idea of the holiday season beginning November 1 because of the traditions she holds with her family, “I think the holiday season begins after Thanksgiving because that is when the weather gets colder, meaning we get to put up our Christmas tree.”
On the other hand, some people like to get into the holiday spirit early. They begin listening to Christmas carols on November 1, not taking the time to wait around for Thanksgiving. Junior Kelly Harmon is very excited about the arrival of Christmas; she has already begun playing Christmas hits and making her wishlist. Kelly also believes that the holiday season begins November 1st because of the frequent breaks students are given throughout November and December.
“I think the holiday season begins November first because of all the rest we are given as students,” She says, “I also like to listen to Christmas music during this time to put me in a good mood throughout the day.”
The idea behind when the holiday season truly starts can be a very controversial topic. Ultimately, it comes down to somebody’s personality and their experience while celebrating the holidays. No matter what time you start celebrating, it’s something to look forward to as it’s quickly approaching!
