The One Love Foundation was founded by Sharon Love after the death of her daughter, Yeardley Love in 2010. Yeardley Love, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player was killed by her ex-boyfriend George Hugeley after attempting to break up with him after years of abuse. According to One Love’s website, the One Love Foundation’s mission is to “honor the tragic death of Yeardley Love by engaging young people through compelling, relatable films and honest conversations around healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors.”
Green Level’s One Love Club was founded in the fall of 2021 by Riley McElreath (Class of 2023). Riley was compelled to start Green Level’s chapter of One Love because she “had a lot of senior friends who were going off to college and wanted to give them the tools and resources they needed to detect healthy and unhealthy patterns within their higher stakes collegiate relationships.”
Riley’s sister, Reese McElreath (Class of 2025) has kept the club running as President since her graduation in 2023 and plans to pass it down to the current Vice President and younger sister, Rowan McElreath (Class of 2028) after she graduates this spring.
When Reese was asked why she decided to keep One Love at Green Level running even after the founder graduated, she said, “For me, it is this one statistic we use throughout the foundation: 1 in 3 men, women, or non-binary individuals will face intimate relationship abuse throughout their lifetime. That covers a spread of me and my two sisters, so it is very important to me that people come to know about the foundation because of how common relationship abuse is.”
