UNC went off in a 52-point blowout against American University securing their 2nd win of the season. Even with 5-star freshman Ian Jackson out, the Tarheels showed a dominant performance at Dean E. Smith Center. They led a dominant defensive performance, with 8 steals, 4 blocks, and 22 points off turnovers. UNC was able to force turnovers and get the easy fastbreak scores. Through this efficient execution, the Tar Heels were able to seize and extend the lead in the second half.
The first half was kept close at 34-43, with UNC scoring higher. However, it didn’t take long before the Tar Heels found their rhythm and pulled away 64-21 in the second half. The final score was a whopping 107-55 blowout win by North Carolina. The scoring leaders were Elliot Cadeau with 18 points and an impressive 4 steals, Jalen Washington with 18 points, and Seth Trimble with 13 points and a whopping 4-6 from the field.
This win officially made UNC 2-1 starting the season, only falling to no. 1 ranked Kansas in a close game. Throughout the season so far it’s easy to see improvement from many, for example, Elliot Cadeau. He shot only a disappointing 19% from behind the arc last season, now he’s starting the season with a 40% 3-point percentage. Seth Trimble as well, he only averaged 5.2 points per game last season; now he’s averaging 15.7. Although it’s early in the season, both have shown flashes of this improvement since the scrimmages and preseason games.
Through trials and tribulation, the Tar Heels have created a successful and giant basketball program at a Division 1 level. Last year UNC only made it into the Sweet 16 and got knocked out by Alabama in the famous March Madness tournament. However, through this exceptional start to the season, UNC has won the support and admiration of the Green Level student body. Here is what some of your fellow Gators have said about the season so far:
“We’re going undefeated baby!” – Greaden Prasad
“I’m very pumped for the season” – Anonymous Student
“It’s only gonna get better from here” – Anonymous student
All there is left to say is just… be ready. UNC is ready to maintain its dominant performance early in the season. So I would suggest staying tuned and keeping an eye out for key players’ improvement. Also, the functionality of the team in turn forces intensity, excitement, and memorable moments throughout the season. Watch out – this could be a season to remember!
