History
As the new semester settles in, the hype is growing at Green Level High School for a brand new dance, the very first Winter Gala.
The idea for the gala was introduced by Enloe High School’s highly anticipated winter charity ball, which fundraises lots of money for the homeless while being student-led.
The student government introduced the idea of the gala and has been working with the National Students Honor Society for Art and PTSA to organize this event to bring students, staff, and community together for a night of fun, while also raising lots of money for “No Kids Hungry.”
Information
In order to be admitted to the Winter Gala, you will, of course, need tickets. The tickets are 25 dollars, or 50 if you are feeling charitable since all proceeds go to charity. You can buy tickets on the Green Level website, or at gofan.com.
For every 100 tickets sold, there will be two prom tickets given away in a raffle, even to underclassmen.
The dance will be held in the Green Level cafeteria, on Saturday, February 1st, from 8-10 PM. There will be food, video games, refreshments, a donut truck (you must get your donut BEFORE entering!), and a DJ whom you can request songs from.
The theme of the dance is a New Orleans Masquerade, where masquerade masks are required, of course. The dress code is black tie attire, and heels are allowed. When asked about why this theme was chosen, Sophomore Leonie Justus
There will be a bead necklace game played throughout the dance. Everyone will begin with one, and you can take someone’s bead necklace by beating them in rock paper scissors, Do not The person with the most necklaces at the end of the dance will get 2 free prom tickets, even if they’re an underclassman.
Charity
All of the profit made from the dance will be going towards the charity, “No Kid Hungry”. Kids all over the world come to school without healthy food or any food at all. This charity gives grants to schools and communities to help kids all over the USA have food on their plates. They also have a research and analytics team to study the best strategies to help hungry children most efficiently.
In 2024, No Kids Hungry raised and gave nearly 18 million dollars to communities across the country. When buying a ticket there are two ticket options, a twenty-five dollar option and a fifty-dollar option. Buying the more expensive option gives more proceeds to charity. A portion of the profit that the food truck makes will also be going to the charity as well.
Student perspective
This is the first year Green Level is hosting an extra dance for all grade levels, and the school is buzzing with excitement.
In years past Green Level has only had a Homecoming dance for all class men and a Prom for upperclassmen. This has had many underclassmen prior feeling left out of school social activities but that has changed with this year’s Winter Charity Gala.
“We started off wanting to make an impact on our local community as a student council at least.” Abhinav Thakur, the vice president of the GL Student Gov. says. “It would be a win-win situation, with having the underclassmen get a dance and donating”
This year is different, and with the gala right around the corner, students are scrambling to find their favorite dress or their nicest suit to dress to impress.
“I’m excited to be able to wear fancy stuff for this and especially being able to wear heels.” Alex Hill explains. “It’s nice that it’s not another sneaker ball like most dances have been.”
Many students are attending with friends or a date, while others hope to meet someone new at the dance.
Whatever the case may be the dance will surely be a hit and a night to enjoy and remember.
