Rory McIlroy has won his first Tour event of 2025 at the AT&T Pro-Am. With a final round of 66, 6-under par he marked his 27th win on Tour.
This tournament hosted at Pebble Beach is one of the toughest tournaments due to the difficulty of the course itself. The par 72, 6972 yd course has been very tricky for golfers in years past due to the coast’s proximity.
Rory pushed through that to take the win with a 2-shot lead over fellow Irishman Shane Lowry.
Rory dominated through most of the week however with an average driving distance 17 yards longer than the next guy. Rory continued to prove his dominance with his driver with +5.37 strokes gained off the tee which led the group.
Before the tournament, many people spotted something new in Rory’s bag this weekend that many credit to his outstanding performance. Rory revealed that he was playing with the new TP5 TaylorMade golf balls.
“I really loved how it felt. And I hadn’t really tested the 2024 TP5 and I loved how it was reacting around the greens,” Mcilroy stated in an interview about his new ball choice. “…I played 18 at Pebble on Tuesday, played 18 at Cypress yesterday with it, and obviously played here today and it’s been really, really good.”
Along with Rory Mcilroy, Shane Lowry, and the 2025 debut of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the Pro-Am as the name suggests is a chance for amateurs to showcase their talents on the PGA tour.
This year many notable names include Steve Young (Hall of Fame quarterback for the San Fransisco 49ers), and Condoleeza Rice (Former Secretary of State under President George W Bush.)
Rice was paired with Justin Thomas and they would finish tied for 12th after two days, Thomas would then continue by himself to finish tied for 48th. Young was paired with Beau Hossler, they would tie for 59th place after two days, and then Hossler would finish tied for 69th.
The PGA is always trying to expand the world of golf and this year they have decided to give a group of collegians a lifetime tour at the famous Pebble Beach Course. Included in this group are two NC A&T women’s golf teammates, Sofia Fernando and Tori Mouton.
Jasmine Allen the AT&T lead marketing manager and former NC A&T cheerleader was asked about what the experience would have been like for her when she was at the collegiate level.
“An experience like this would have meant the world to me,” Allen explained during her interview.
The world of golf is growing every single day due to tournaments and experiences such as the ones surrounding the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
As well as this Rory McIlroy is continuing to improve and showcase his skills as he continues his journey for the coveted major grand slam, McIlroy is one Master away from completing his journey and we hope to see him improve and grow in the game of golf.
