Spring sports have returned! With that comes many sports, including men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s golf, softball, outdoor track, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, and stunt. One of the most favored and nostalgic sports here at Green Level is baseball.
Baseball here at Green Level has always been a competitive and notable sport. Previously coached by Ryan Thorpe, the team has been successful since the opening in 2019. This year baseball will open its season at Green Level on Wednesday, February 26th against Broughton, an out-of-conference match up.
This season, the baseball team adjusted to a giant change, getting a new head coach. David Miller took on the responsibility of coaching the baseball team, in addition to being a math teacher here at Green Level. Miller has a large, inspiring background with baseball.
“I played in college for UNC, was drafted by the Florida Marlins and played minor leagues for a couple of years, and have been coaching college or high school for 24 years. My inspiration for coaching was my father, who was a high school basketball coach,” said Miller.
Miller can also see himself in his athletes he’s beginning to coach.
“I’m really just looking forward to working with and developing the young men on the baseball team. Helping them become better players and more prepared for life after high school, maybe even helping some go on the same path I did,” Miller says.
With the season opening on Wednesday, the baseball team doesn’t have much time to prepare for this game. Especially due to the inclement weather and snow days Green Level received on the latter end of the week prior, practice time is extremely limited.
Players such as Freshman Nicky Donaldson recognize the challenges that are going to come with this season.
“I think that this season is going to be super fun but also super challenging. We definitely are facing a lot of competition but I think with lots of practice we will find how to work as a team. I’m also just super excited for my first ever high school season and being able to play with my friends.”
On Friday, the baseball team will also travel to Willow Spring, another out-of-conference game, to conclude the first week of the season. The Gators will hopefully outscore their competition against both of these teams.
The Gators season lasts until the very end of April, being just about three months long. Hopefully these athletes receive a competitive and fun filled season!
