It’s no secret that our men’s tennis team has had some challenges this year. Most notably, the fact that they couldn’t even play on our own tennis courts. They are under construction due to some geographical issues with the school. Despite these problems, our Gators stay persistent and rise to the occasion. The team is now leading a 12-2 record on a 9-game winning streak.
The Gators knocked off top 10 team Green Hope, and our rival Panther Creek. These 2 wins especially were big successes, that showed SWAC how good the Gators really are. They even beat Green Hope and Panther Creek within that 9-game winning streak the team is currently on. This was also Green Hope’s only loss on the season.
Currently the Gators are at Cary Tennis Park for the SWAC tournament. They have led a dominant performance, only losing matches against Panther Creek and Green Hope (who are both ranked top opponents in the East by the NCHSAA). This is also the first time all members of the team have qualified for regionals.
The key to their success is the great young core of players they have. Varsity player Mihir Mohan elaborates on “Me, Trishiv, and Rishit” being a great freshman trio. Rishit Sharma even took home the title of “SWAC singles champion” along with runner-up: Trishiv Premenand.
The future of the Green Level men’s tennis program is looking bright. This season has been a masterclass, with all players going to regionals and knocking off top opponents. Let’s hope they can go even further; and bring home a state championship.
