Recently temperatures in the Green Level High School building have increased. Dozens of students are feeling this temperature change, and are wondering, why? Especially when things are heating up outside now, proper air conditioning is needed.
The heat is so intense that classes are even having class in the cafeteria or colder spaces just so they can cool down. Studies by the APA show that extreme temperatures can decrease concentration. Take Ms. Childress for example. Ms. Childress is an AP/Honors world history teacher here at Green Level. On Friday, when the heat was getting especially high; she took her class out to the cafeteria to cool down while doing their work.
Sporsho is a student in her class, and he thinks, “It helps a lot because I’m not focused on 2 things (being hot and wanting to cool down; and his work). Being in the cafeteria to cool down helps me hyperfocus on my schoolwork.”
Even more students believe the heat is affecting their ability to learn and focus in school. Greaden Prasad thinks, “It’s way too hot to focus. Biology’s already hard enough.” Mayank Mondal believes that, “The air conditioning should be way more consistent. Better cooling at temperature control.” Although these are just the student perspectives. The ones paying for the extreme temperatures; but what about the people fighting the problem.
Mr Viens is the admin/assistant principal mostly in charge of handling this problem. I had a talk with him breaking down how the air conditioning control at Green Level actually works; and the answer may surprise you. Interestingly enough, Green Level doesn’t control the AC on site, it is controlled by a central office located elsewhere. The set temp is always 73, so if it gets over 78; or below 67 Viens calls the central office to sort things out. They then send out a person to either just reset it, or if it’s really broken… fix it.
This year different parts of the AC have actually been broken, so they sent out some maintenance crewmen to fix it. Also, there is not one, or even 2 central AC units. There is a different unit on each side and floor of the school. For instance; Side b 3rd floor. So they have to send people out to fix all those different units that are broken. It also takes a considerable amount of time to send these people out, although it mainly depends on the magnitude of the problem.
Mr. Viens suggests if you face any problems to dress accordingly. After that alert him immediately, he will take care of it. Until then all you can do is just hope for the best, and wait for the maintenance to solve the issue.
