In early 2025 there was reported a data breach in powerschool, giving access to hundreds of people’s private information. The assailants are unknown, but they have not been quiet. There have been reports of members within the WCPSS system getting emails claiming that the cybercriminals have personal information about students and staff.
Although there are concerns, there are reasons to not panic. Student here at green level Sohum Kunde says, “I’m not really concerned at all.” This is understandable when you realize all the precautions being taken.
Parents, teachers, and members of the WCPSS system were sent an email warning them about the emails. The email members received from WCPSS essentially just warned them about the cybercriminals and informed people about what to do if you do get involved. “Do not click any links in the message,” “Do not reply or try to contact the sender,” and report it immediately by filling out this form.
Although that still doesn’t ensure protection of your private information. WCPSS is also offering free protective services to those concerned.
“All WCPSS staff and families are eligible for free identity protection and credit monitoring. Services are free and available until July 1, 2025.”
The free protective services includes: 2 years of complimentary identity protection to any students or educators affected, and 2 years of complimentary credit monitoring for adult students and educators affected. If these do not appeal to you you can always freeze your identity for free through the NCDJ (North Carolina Department of Justice).
Wake county schools ensure they are working closely with state officials to stay informed and respond to threats as quickly as possibly. It is encouraged to take advantage of the free protective services, and report anything that seems suspicious. Extreme measures are being done to resolve this issue.
