Every sports team has a fan base. The NFL has the Steeler Crazies, Chiefs Kingdom, among many others. This is no different in colleges with the Fighting Irish and the Oklahoma Sooners. Imagine a football stadium filled with tens of thousands of people screaming and cheering on their team. The night could end with people all rowdy and excited about winning but they could also end the night feeling dejected.
Even high schools, locally, there are the Cougar Crazies, and the Falcon Frenzies. Here at Green Level we have the Gator Goonies. The Goonies consist of a group of seniors who go to every game they can to support the teams that are present at their school.
“The purpose of the Gator Goonies is to hype up the student section and get everybody to participate and have fun.” Said Molly Valentine, a Goonie.
A recent rivalry game was the Green Hope Falcons against the Green Level Gators in volleyball. The stands were filled to the brim with students and parents rallying up for their teams, the number one and number two teams in the state.
“The more people that are there definitely brings more spirit. And I think it just makes the players play better because they feel like they have people rooting for them and cheering them on.” Says Valentine.
The Gators had defeated the Falcons in three sets and the energy in the gym was radiating.
Home football games are the highlight of everyone’s week. The Goonies make up a theme for every football game.
Valentine says, “I think the themes are a great way to get more students involved, people love dressing up.”
Football games are a way for everyone to come together and support each other and the people on the field.
A game coming up is the Orange Out volleyball game, this is certainly one of the biggest games of the year, consisting of raffle tickets, prizes, donations, and of course watching the volleyball team. The Orange Out game is meant to raise money for leukemia, over the past two years they have raised thousands of dollars. The Goonies help promote this game and unite everyone, spreading awareness for this important cause.
The Gator Goonies create memories that students will carry with them after high school. The different chants and the themes remind people what school spirit really is. The Goonies are giving people something to look forward to each week.
From cheering in the stands, to raising awareness for important causes, the Gator Goonies are more than just a few students cheering on their school. They represent pride and unity at Green Level High school. In the end, the Goonies bring so many people together to create long lasting friendships while also showing some school spirit!
