Homecoming traditions have been a staple in the life of high school students for over a century. Traditions range from Friday night football rivalries, pep rallies, school-spirit, and of course the conventional Homecoming dance. However, one of the most anticipated traditions include the annual crowning of the Homecoming king and queen.
On Saturday night, during this year’s Homecoming dance themed as “starry night”, six Green Level seniors will be in contention for the cherished positions of Homecoming king and queen.
One of those seniors is Ethan Seddon. This is Seddon’s second year being selected to the Homecoming court.
“It feels really good. It’s definitely an honor to know that people nominated you,” Seddon said. “When I heard that I was nominated, it wasn’t a surprise, but it felt good.”
The process for a student, like Seddon, to be nominated to Homecoming court is very selective. Students vote on their fellow classmates to represent them on the Homecoming court. With over two-thousand students at Green Level, chances of being one of the few selected to the Homecoming court are slim.
Another nominee for this year’s Homecoming court is freshman Jackson Kirby. Kirby is attending the dance with fellow freshman, and another Homecoming court member, Sophie Kimbark.
Kirby explained that he was not expecting the nomination, “I was surprised, for sure… it’s kind of cool to be one of the twelve nominated.”
Both Seddon and Kirby look forward to kicking off the Homecoming festivities tonight at Green Level’s football game against Panther Creek. During halftime, the twelve members of this year’s Homecoming court will be introduced to the Green Level faithful. The nominees outfits’ tonight will be topped off with the royal Homecoming sashes that wrap around the shoulder of the nominees.
“That’s the most fun part,” Seddon said, “You get to go onto the middle of the field, in front of everybody and get announced, so yeah, that’s definitely fun.”
However, the big moment for these nominees comes Saturday at the Homecoming dance.
When a Homecoming king and queen are announced, Ethan said if it was him, “I’d be so happy. The crowns look really cool, and it would be so fun if I got it.”
The Green Level Homecoming dance takes place on Saturday at 7 PM. The other Homecoming court members include sophomores Aiden Rodriguez and Abigail Oo, juniors Giovani Sari and Bruna Marques, and making up the rest of the senior nominees for Homecoming king and queen are Amelia Wu, Emily Zhu, Leah Smith, Ashwin Sivakumaran, and Abhinav Moturi.
