Green Level’s marching band is about more than just music, it’s teamwork, passion, and a chance for students to express themselves creatively. The marching band is best known for its halftime show during football games, but they also participate in local competitions and spend hours behind the scenes practicing. Every member of the band works tirelessly to bring each performance to life and convey their message.
The title of this year’s field show is “A Sense of Direction”. The show follows a person as they get lost and find their way. The show includes props like compasses to convey this theme. Max Hill, senior and long time member of the band, explains the true message they hope to share with their audience this year.
“There’s always going to be obstacles and things that you go through, it’s about how you find your path, where you belong, and the emotions and feelings you go through and have.” Hill said.
The true experience of being in the marching band is not just what meets the eye, there are endless hours spent practicing and traveling. Max Hill reports spending over 15 hours a week just on duties for the marching band.
Hill says, “I don’t think people realize how much time it takes because for the months of September to November we’re generally busy every single weekend with competitions and when we have to travel we leave at like 2:00 in the morning.”
As the marching band takes on a new season, they look to stay consistent while still clicking as a group and maintaining strong relationships with one another. Senior, Elizabeth Lu, hopes that group can get along better so that the year stays drama free.
“I think a goal for the season is to work as a team more. Have fun, don’t trash talk other people, and just enjoy the year.” Says Lu.
Hill expresses a more competitive attitude as he explains the band’s goal to perform well in competitions. Bands of America (or BOA) is the biggest organization that holds competitions, and Regionals is the event all members are looking towards.
“We don’t really care about placements, it’s really more about the work we put in the show.” Says Hill, “Everyone wants to make finals because every year, there is a final retreat where everyone goes out with all twelve huge bands, all mixed, and get to meet each other.”
This is certainly an achievable goal for the marching band this season, one that the entire band is keen on accomplishing.
“Overall everyone just kind of wants no regrets as we look back.” Says Hill.
With their mix of dedication, teamwork, and a love for music, the marching band is destined for a successful and exciting season. Make sure to look out for their performances during halftime and get out to their upcoming local competition performances, starting this Saturday evening at Panther Creek High School. Good luck Gators!
