With the school year starting, sickness has been spreading among the students and staff here at Green Level. A plethora of tissues, cough drops, and hand sanitizer have been needed in classrooms.
Over the summer, students spent time with their friends outside for three months. However, with students returning to close quarters after the summer, they are exposed to new germs from over 2,200 different people.
Freshman, Inika Agsebagil says, “People who are sick still come to school, including me, because I don’t want to miss class since it’s the beginning of the school year.”
This September sickness is a recurring event every year towards the start of Fall and usually dies down before Christmas when the flu season starts. Agsebagil explains that she doesn’t think the cycle of this sickness ever stops.
“It really doesn’t get better until next summer because we are transitioning into flu season, and then the seasons change to spring and pollen comes around.” Says Agsebagil.
There is no exact diagnosis for this sickness, and some say it’s just like having a cold. While others, on the more severe side, feel like they have the Flu.
Absebagil says, “I was coughing and I had a sore throat on the first day and a runny nose the rest of the week, it felt like I had a cold”.
The staff are trying to avoid getting this sickness as well. Whether its hand sanitizer at the door or distancing from those who are affected.
As the school year starts, the annual surge of sickness at Green Level reminds us of the importance of health precautions. By staying vigilant and promoting good hygiene, students and staff can create a healthier environment for everyone and hope to avoid this next year.
