If you’ve ever wanted to put your art, writing, or creativity out there for others to see, Green Level’s Lit Mag gives students the opportunity to do just that. Lit Mag, Short for “Literary Magazine,” celebrates student voice, artistic expression, and literature by publishing a collection of student art that showcases the incredible talent within our school.
Nikunj Giridhar, a senior co-editor, says, “Last year was a really new experience because all the seniors, who were some of the club’s founding members, all graduated. I’ve been in the club all four years. I joined as a freshman after submitting my poetry. I actually got ‘scouted’ to join by my English teacher, Mrs. Williams, so I’ve always been grateful to her for showing me this platform to share my writing.”
At its core, Lit Mag’s goal is simple: give students a platform to showcase their creativity.
“We put together a magazine of various student visual art, poetry, and prose; then we publish one print and one digital magazine every year that showcases the GLHS student body’s artistic talent,” Giridhar explains.
Getting those submissions is no small task; editors rely on social media and teachers to spread the word.
“We get our art from all the Art, Creative Writing, and English teachers. We email all of them throughout the year, asking them to let students know of the opportunity to submit and be published, in addition to a lot of social media marketing.” Says Giridhar.
While many submissions come from classes, Lit Mag is open to all students.
Giridhar says, “Of course, students can submit art to us whether they made it for a class, out of school, or even if they aren’t in any of the classes.”
The direct result of this is a diverse collection of writing and art that reflects the students.
“Our art is always very impressive, and the writing very impactful. We have some really, really talented students here at Green level. It makes me proud of the club that our lit mag is genuinely worth checking out,” Giridhar shared.
Over his four years with the club, Giridhar has noticed a shift in the types of work students tend to submit.
“Generally, the number of writing submissions has decreased, and pictures and digital art have been showing up more and more. I think it’s a sign that people have become less comfortable with writing for fun. And our mission is to give people the platform for being recognized for their talents.”
School Library Media Coordinator, Mrs. Henderson, the advisor for the club, highlighted why students should view the club as an opportunity.
“I think it’s cool that if you do put your art in there, the magazines are actually published, and you can show it off. It also looks good for colleges that have art in your school’s literary magazine.” Says Henderson.
Lit Mag is more than a publication; it’s a celebration of Green Level’s creativity. By providing students with a platform to share their voices, the club ensures that art and writing don’t just stay in the classroom, but are recognized, understood, and remembered.
