One thing that makes Green Level unique is the wide variety and range of clubs offered here at the school. With over 170 to choose from, this feature is about the National Organization for Women (NOW) – a group that focuses on promoting inclusivity, learning about women’s rights and history, and spreading awareness about the women in the Green Level community.
Senior and club leader Camila Rubiano shares that their club is one of many chapters across the country that contribute to the national organization.
They meet every other Thursday in Ms. Clark’s room, 3143, with cookies for everyone who attends.
At each meeting, the leaders present a slideshow that highlights a “Woman of the Week,” focusing on someone who has made a lasting impact on gender equality. Freshman Inika Agsebagil, who attends the club regularly, explains this week’s featured woman.
“Today, we learned about Emma Watson and her HeforShe speech and how inspirational it was to people and for women’s empowerment,” Agsebagil says.
Along with the Women of the Week, members take part in different hands-on activities that help them reflect on empowerment and kindness within their community.
Agsebagil explains, “At our first meeting, we wrote letters to our future selves, then at the second meeting we set goals, and at this week’s meeting we wrote letters to hospitalized kids wishing them a Happy Halloween.”
Another part of their meetings involves brainstorming ways to make women’s lives easier.
“We notice an issue and find a solution, like today we were thinking of ways to decrease the price of feminine products in public bathrooms so it is accessible to everyone.” Freshman Nidhi Kunshetty shares.
In addition to discussions, NOW participates in and hosts fundraisers throughout the year. One major event they lead is in partnership with an organization called Layers of Dignity.
“We collect a bunch of hygiene products and socks for women who are survivors of sexual assault,” Rubiano explains.
The National Organization for Women at Green Level continues to support and uplift women in the Triangle area who need it most. Be sure to help contribute by coming to their next meeting on Thursday, 10/23, in room 3143.
