At Green Level, the library has been known to have two main librarians, Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Weller. But starting this school year, they have added a third librarian to the staff.
Andrea Evans has been an English teacher at Green Level since the school opened, but now she has transitioned to the librarian role, starting this year at Green Level.
The switch to becoming a librarian was not a shock to her. Growing up, Evans always wanted to eventually become a librarian. When COVID came around in 2020, it presented the perfect opportunity for Evans to start thinking about pursuing this dream of hers.
“When COVID happened, I thought, Why not get my degree now, so that I can be ready to take an opportunity if it presents itself?” Evans said, “I’ve been working toward my MLIS [Master’s of Library & Information Science] since 2022.”
The library role provides many aspects of teaching an English class, while also giving Evans a different perspective on working with students daily.
“Librarianship combines all the parts of teaching that I love; being with students all day, planning lessons, being around and talking about books, but in the library, I can work with even more students in other disciplines besides English,” Evans explained. “I’ll always be an English teacher, but to me, the library is just a bigger classroom.”
Becoming a librarian allows you to have a more flexible schedule to branch out and pursue other opportunities. Evans has taken advantage of this flexibility. Not only has she joined the Green Level librarian staff, but she has also taken a job at nearby Alston Ridge Middle School, also as a librarian.
Overall, Evans has enjoyed this transition, as librarians at both schools have been very welcoming to her.
“The librarians I’m working with at both schools have been amazingly helpful to me; there’s a ton to learn about doing this job,” Evans said.
