Hindu Student Council will host their third annual Diwali celebration on Thursday, October 23, in the school cafeteria during Connectivity. The event will feature traditional Indian performances and snacks, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. This year’s celebration will consist of three student performances and a variety of grab-and-go snack bags filled with classic Indian treats. With plenty of decorations, music, and opportunities to hang out with friends, it’s sure to be a fun and lively way to celebrate Diwali in school.
“A good percentage of the school’s demographics is Indian, so it’s important to recognize these cultures and traditions and to celebrate these holidays because so many people in this school do,” says junior Aarin Patel. A key member of the club, Patel became a leader of the Hindu Student Council in the second semester of his sophomore year.
Senior Hasitha Sundaragiri, also a club leader, shares similar views on the significance of a cultural event like this. “It helps people be recognized,” she says. “They don’t have to hide the fact that they celebrate all these holidays and participate in these traditions outside of school; they’re given the opportunity to do it in school as well.” Sundaragiri is looking forward to sharing aspects of her culture—specifically the musical performances—at the event for others to enjoy.
Patel is proud of how much HSC has grown since he joined. “There are significantly more members in Hindu Student Council this year compared to last year, and we’ve managed to reach out to more places for volunteer opportunities,” he says. “We’re also planning to host other celebrations besides Diwali throughout the course of the year.”
Sundaragiri notes that when she first joined the club in her sophomore year, it consisted of smaller meetings and occasional cultural trivia. She has spent the past year working to make the club something bigger, where they can actually host celebrations like this one and provide students with volunteer opportunities at local Hindu organizations.
Students interested in joining the celebration can sign up for the event on AllTimely to attend during Connectivity. Whether celebrating Diwali or simply hoping to enjoy the performances, food, and atmosphere, the Hindu Student Council’s event offers a great opportunity to spend time with friends and experience the traditions that make up this important holiday.
