The North Carolina State Fair is set to kick off on Thursday, 10/16, and ends on Sunday, 10/26. bringing excitement and entertainment to visitors. With a variety of attractions and food, this annual event celebrates the spirit of the state.
The fair first began in 1853 as a way to highlight the state’s agriculture. Over the years, it has grown into one of North Carolina’s largest events, with almost a million visitors. Each year, participants enjoy the mix of rides, food, games, and exhibits.
The fair features approximately 150 food vendors, offering many different culinary treats. From classic fair foods like funnel cakes to unique combinations like ranch fried cheese curds.
Freshman Maddie Edwards said, “My favorite food is the ice cream with the swirl and the flavor. The combination of ice cream and toppings makes it a must-try treat at the fair.”
In addition to the food, the fair has over 100 games and rides, ranging from thrilling mini rollercoasters to fun challenges like throwing the ring toss. Each game offers the chance to win prizes like a stuffed animal or even a goldfish!
“I love playing the games because one time when I was little, I won a llama stuffed animal by throwing the darts at balloons,” Edwards says.
The State Fair attracts visitors of all ages. Children are drawn in by the bright lights, rides, and the fun of winning prizes, while older visitors often explore the agricultural exhibits. These exhibits celebrate North Carolina’s farming roots and include chances to see and even milk cows and goats.
Edwards says, “My favorite ride has always been the Zipper because there is a lot of movement. It always brings me back every year.”
Along with the agricultural side, the fair also features an art exhibit in one of the buildings that includes drawings and paintings entered by students in the Triangle Area through their schools. It is a great opportunity to highlight their creativity and talent.
These are only some of the things that the NC State Fair offers. Other activities include cake-decorating competitions, photography contests, the famous giant pumpkin competition, and many more.
This year marks the 172nd year of the North Carolina State Fair. Whether it’s the thrill of the rides or the sense of community found in art and agriculture, the fair is a celebration of everything that makes North Carolina special.
