Homework is one of the most controversial things when talking to teachers and students. You either hate it, or you love it, there is no in between. And in my opinion, we shouldn’t have any homework at all.
I think that when doing homework, students are stressed from a long day of school, and when they get home they just want to sit down, relax, and not think about their classes, and when doing homework I don’t think we learn anything. I think there is enough time during class to work on the content everyday, and students should use their time off school to do things they are interested in or even study for tests.
Mr. Hodges teaches American history and AP Comparative Government, and has an opinion on the issue, “In American History I don’t give out any homework, and the AP course does have some textbook reading, but that’s the only homework I give.”
When asked about the importance of homework for learning, he said that it depends on the class, that homework in math classes for example is good for skill practice and helps the students to memorize the operations correctly. But in classes like the ones he teaches, he believes there is plenty of time to be efficient and do everything they need in class with him, and in his opinion the students have classes 8 hours a day, and he wants to maximize those 8 hours and not for us to go home and do more work.
“I do not give any homework in my class. I feel like students have enough time constraints when they get home from school,” said Ms. Narula, an English teacher.
She also talked about how sometimes teenagers work part-time jobs to help their families, and it wouldn’t be fair for them to have to work and also do school work after school. She gives time in her class for the students to work on it, and hopes that students use their time efficiently.
So, after listening to both their opinions, I believe that homework could be important to some classes that require skill practice, but for most classes I think that there is enough time to cover everything in class and there’s no need to do school work at home.
