Puerto Rico Earthquakes

S. Rameshbabu, Staff Writer

In early January, Puerto Rico was struck by a series of 10 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater. The strongest one was a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. There have been at least 6- 18 people dead, but the death toll is expected to rise as buildings are being inspected. One quarter of the island doesn’t have good water. Houses and churches have been destroyed. Now the earthquakes have stopped, but people are really scared to sleep because they are fearing that an earthquake will occur in the middle of the night and wake everyone up, bringing more destruction with it. Some people consider this the worst earthquake in more than 100 years, due to the damage and severity of the earthquake.

One of the most famous landmarks on the beautiful countries, Punta Ventana rock, collapsed and the arch it shaped is now collapsed due to the earthquake. Most parts of the island didn’t feel the earthquake, but places like Guayanilla was affected a lot because the houses were destroyed and the water is now contaminated. But the important part which Puerto Rico should keep in mind is that to repay the damage of the earthquake you need billions of dollars.
