New Sports Complex?

Wake County officials have agreed to build a new multi million dollar, completely indoor, sports complex for Cary Towne Center. They have gathered this much money from tourism taxes, as well as some taxes from residents. The sports center is part of a complete overhaul of the old mall property, complete with residential areas, hotel rooms, and office spaces. According to WRAL, the complex has a planned 25,000 square feet of multi purpose space, 12 full size basketball courts which can convert to 20 full sized volleyball courts, and takes up 5 of the 38 acres the mall has. It also includes locker rooms, meeting spaces, and a capacity for up to 4,000 spectators. There are also plans for esports amenities, childcare space, weight room, and a track.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to spend up to 2.6 million dollars a year for 25 years in order to fund the construction of the 5 acre facility. The hospitality tax would cover 35 million of the 193 million dollar cost. According to CBS 17, the sports complex will be mainly focused on attracting competitive tournaments. Most families living in neighborhoods near the Cary Towne Center are supportive of the new sports complex being built and say that it will help kids to be more involved in sports programs. After the Raleigh City Council approves the funding plan for the complex, the staff will then work with Cary to finalize the project. The area in the Cary Towne Center receives little amounts of people walking through it’s doors. The JC Penny in the area has started looking for better areas to move to and the other stores have already closed down their doors. According to The News Observer, the sports complex will revitalize the Cary Towne Center by providing many sports and esports programs alike at the complex.
