NBA Deep Dive
November 19, 2020
As the 2020 NBA offseason approaches, teams will have a chance to enhance their rosters and shape up for the future. It will be an unusual time though, since the period won’t be as long and teams will not be able to scout players as they usually do in person due to Covid-19 restrictions. But it will be an exciting offseason, nonetheless. This article examines two teams that could surprise many with their performances next season.
#1. Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks have arguably the league’s best young duo in Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. We saw a glimpse of how well they played this past season when they took the heavy favorite LA Clippers to 6 games in the playoffs. Doncic shined in the series, earning records and making game winners, solidifying himself as a star in the NBA. The Mavs have not gained as much respect considering how many contenders there are in the western conference, such as the Lakers, Clippers, and Warriors. But now, they will be coming back even stronger with their players more developed. This offseason will be important for them as they seek a third star, such as guard Victor Oladipo, who has been in many trade rumours. Even then, Dallas can surprise many next season and pull off upsets against some of the league’s best.
#2. Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies had a tough end to their season, barely missing the playoffs in the NBA’s first ever play-in game. This team is a set for the future, with another great young core of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., and other great additions in Dillon Brooks and Jonas Valančiūnas. It’s important to note that this team was not fully healthy during the NBA Restart, which makes them even more scary to face when they return next season. Ja Morant will only get better from here, after an impressive first season where he also won Rookie of The Year. But to compete, the Grizzlies will definitely need to improve their bench and gain a scoring wing like every other contender has. With only one pick in this year’s draft, free agency and trades will be very important for Memphis in the upcoming months. With this and the superb play of their young team, they can be a threat for many years to come.
There are many exciting teams in the league next season that can make the jump from good to great. Who do you think will be the best next year?
