Next Wednesday, September 25th, the Green Level Women’s volleyball team will face the Millbrook Wildcats in a game dedicated to raising awareness for Leukemia. This will be the 2nd annual game targeted to addressing the battle of Leukemia, on the behalf of student-athlete Reese Roper. She has served as a fundamental aspect of the Green Level Varsity volleyball team.
The Gators, seeded first in SWAC Conference with a 8-0 record (12-2 overall) will compete against the 4-0 first seed (9-2 overall) in the NAC VI. This game acts as more than a reminder of seed, score, or North Carolina ranking. It serves to emphasize the potency of banding together in a movement for change against Leukemia.
Green Level’s volleyball team has crafted posters in recognition, that will be strewn across the gym and school. The theme is orange out, as this is the nationally recognized color for Leukemia cancer. Free admission will be applicable to individuals that donate to the cause. Alongside this, there will be opportunity for raffle items, silent auction items, and t-shirt sales with all proceeds being given to the Light the Night foundation, in order to combat Leukemia. Specific “Orange Out: Spike Out Cancer” shirts are available upon reaching out to the Green Level volleyball Instagram: g_l_volleyball.
Upon interviewing student-athlete Reese Roper she states, “We want to win this game like we do each other. However, this game is so much bigger than just our individual team and I feel like there is a bigger drive.” In being prompted on the mentality when competing against the Wildcats she signifies the importance of each athlete playing for something bigger than themselves on Wednesday night.
After reminiscing on last fall’s inaugural Orange Out game she says, “We reverse swept Apex at last year’s dedication game. Being all together at the end of the match and celebrating together was a memory I’ll never forget.” The gravest notion navigating this team is the bond they have fabricated throughout the duration of the season. They win, they lose, they do it together.
When prompted about this tradition being instilled into the culture of Green Level volleyball she is quick to consider, “I do think so actually. I believe due to my coach’s passion and how meaningful it is to her, it will last a lifetime. She’s always been so supportive.”
