A monumental season for the Green Level Women’s Soccer team came to an end on Monday night after a tough 5-2 loss versus the Patriots of Apex Friendship in the first round of playoffs.
Although the postseason was cut short due to this loss, the Lady Gators have a lot to be proud of. Several records were broken this season not only by individual players, but the team as a whole as well. As a team, they broke the record for most wins in a single season with 14 wins. Jane Moore, a sophomore, broke the record for most goals in a single season with 19 goals and most career goals with 33. Hayes Wasdell, a sophomore, broke the record for most assists in a single season with 14. Additionally, Alli Peterson is now the single season leader in saves with 100 saves.
This season was Hayes Wasdell’s first season playing with this team, and she was very excited for what the season could bring for her and the team. She believes the team has a lot of great talent on the team and hopes to go farther in the playoffs next season. Wasdell had to make adjustments in order to perform her best and stay consistent throughout the season. She primarily played wing this season, a position she hadn’t played since her early days playing soccer. “Just learning the position and how to play it and practicing my corners on my own outside of normal school practice” were all things that helped her stay consistent and therefore perform well in not only her new position, but a whole new team.
This year’s senior class leaves behind big shoes to fill and bittersweet memories to last a lifetime. Two of the seven graduating seniors will continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level–Molly Perla (Lenoir-Rhyne University) and Lune Denhartog (Lynchburg University). Each senior had a profound impact on the team and all of them have very bright futures ahead of them, whether they are continuing their soccer career or not.
Congratulations to the Lady Gators for an incredible season!
