Whether it’s Jingle Bell Rock or Last Christmas, everyone has a favorite Christmas song. Although these songs can be overplayed and persistent, they are the perfect touch to the holiday season.
The first Christmas tune originated in the early 4th century as just a hymn to honor Jesus and the religion of Christianity. However, as time progressed, so did the joyful and charismatic Christmas songs.
The 19th century gave birth to classics, such as “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night”, while the 20th century introduced iconic carols, such as “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Legendary artists such as Bing Crosby, with “White Christmas,” and Mariah Carey, with “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” have greatly helped popularize holiday music and create timeless memorable songs.
Christmas songs resonate emotionally, evoking feelings of warmth, joy, and nostalgia, all while fostering connections among listeners. “Jingle Bells” by Frank Sinatra does exactly that for Green Level Student Sophie Ghia. Ghia says, “Well this is one of my favorites because of the jazz elements it has. Also, my mother and I always listen to it during the holiday season and it really reminds me of her whenever I listen to it.”
Sophie also adds that this song is just a classic, and the flair it adds is so fun to listen to and truly gets her in the Christmas spirit.
Another fan favorite is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Judy Garland. Media Specialist Rebecca Ashley says this is one of her favorites due to the message it conveys. “I truly do want everyone to have a merry little Christmas, and this song puts it in a fun and catchy tune for everyone to remember,” exclaims Ashley.
In essence, Christmas songs celebrate love and togetherness, making the holiday season even more special. Whether it is classic or modern, these melodies all enrich our lives and bring us closer together. There is truly a Christmas song out there for everyone to enjoy!
