Prom this year was on a Friday, this is the first time in the history of the school this has happened. With Mrs. Summer’s approval, Juniors and Seniors did not have to go to school to be able to attend prom. This made the classes very light compared to normal, especially the upperclassmen core classes.
Animal Science teacher, Mrs. Landa has all different grades in her classes and still there were barely any people in her classes. Especially in her Animal Science Two class, which has a majority of upperclassmen.
Landa said, “In Animal Science two there was only a third of the class, which since it’s a small class meant there were only seven students.”
The theme this year was a Night on Mount Olympus. This was a Greek mythology themed prom. The expectations were high and the student government delivered with the amazing photobooths and decorations in the hallway walking into school.
The photobooths even included the iconic white columns and props to make your photos aesthetic. Photos are a very important part of prom so having a photobooth that people enjoy was very important.
Senior Leah Smith and Senior Ethan Setton won prom king and queen. They also were voted as the winners of Homecoming Court in the Fall.
Smith said, “I feel like you see in high school movies, like anyone can win prom queen. So that was really cool.”
Foodwise, there were many different options. There were spring rolls, chicken nuggets, fruit, a charcuterie board, some desserts, and many candy options.
“They had all my favorite candy like Hershey’s and jolly ranchers. They made a rainbow with the candy,” said Smith.
Leonie Justus is the Junior Class Vice President. She had a major role in planning prom and creating the centerpieces. The centerpieces for each table were very pretty and included a lot of hard work from the junior class.
Justus said, “We had to stick to a strict budget so what we decided to do was use vases we had and put styrofoam in them and then we put roses that we spray painted gold inside.”
These looked great and the hard work from the junior class council was seen throughout the venue. However, there were some areas for improvement like the decorations inside the ballroom. The outside decorations were beautiful with the photobooth and entrance but it didn’t encompass the whole inside area. In the inside there were really only the centerpieces which looked great but it didn’t fully embody the theme.
This year the music recommendation process was a little different. There was an app that people could add their song choices into before they even got to prom so that the DJ had songs to choose from.
Justus said, “150 people signed up to the playlist and added songs in the actual app. The DJ did decided to play them so everyone seemed to love the DJ as well.”
The dance floor was full of people dancing and singing. There was a lot of energy and people were even being thrown in the air. There were some conga lines and even a dance circle.
Junior Alex Yang was a prominent face on the dance floor the whole night. He made sure to include everyone and had a great time.
“I was there to get people to kind of come onto the floor and eventually they did. The DJ eventually started playing more popular music and everyone else started dancing on their own too, it was really nice,” Yang said.
Despite all the good there was still a large portion of the juniors and seniors who didn’t attend prom. The ticket prices are a deciding factor in why some students don’t want to go but others just have a negative perception of prom from previous years.
Yang said, “I think people should go to prom next year, because it’s gonna be even bigger and better with the information that the Student Government collects each year. We will keep stepping it up and make prom even better.”
The tickets were cheaper this year and for the people who attended prom, it was great and a lot of fun. The dance floor was full of energy, the food was good, the photobooths were beautiful, and the outside decorations were amazing. Prom was great this year and the Student Government is looking to make it even better next year.
