Christmas parades are a long-standing tradition in many communities, drawing families together to celebrate the holiday season with floats, marching bands, dancers, and other festive performances. These events almost always attract large crowds, creating an atmosphere of excitement for children and adults. With their growing popularity, parades have become a central part of holiday celebrations in towns and cities across the country.
Any large group gathering has its risks, as questions about the children’s safety are growing. Factors such as crowd control, traffic control, weather conditions, and event organization can all influence the safety of the people. In November of 2022, the Raleigh Christmas Parade was marked by a tragedy when an 11 year old girl was fatally hit by an out-of-control pickup truck. The vehicle lost control while pulling a float, hitting the girl, who was performing with her dance group. The incident shocked the community and raised urgent questions about parade safety, particularly vehicle inspections and crowd management at large public events.
Legal proceedings followed in the years after the accident, with Landen Glass, the man driving the truck, pleading guilty to obstruction of justice, death by motor vehicle, and carrying a dangerous weapon at the parade. In November 2025, he was sentenced to 262 days of confinement, 400 hours of community service, and three years of supervised probation.
Following the Raleigh tragedy, city officials and event organizers across the United States began reviewing safety protocols for parades and similar public events.
“I’m imagining it’s really hard to organize and get all the different groups who are going to be marching in it, and then figuring out a big enough space, shutting down the roads, and rerouting traffic.” said Ms. Achilli.
Measures such as stricter vehicle inspections, enhanced driver background checks, and clearer emergency response procedures were introduced in many communities. These steps were designed to reduce risks that may come with large-scale events where vehicles and pedestrians share a space.
The incident did tend to promote discussions about balancing the Christmas tradition with public safety, however, parades remain a cherished part of holiday celebrations.
“I have really fond memories of parades as a child, I guess it’s a sense of nostalgia.”
By examining these practices put into place, communities aim to preserve the festive spirit that we have always known of with such events while still minimizing the potential hazards for the children and families who decide to participate.
