Playboi Carti’s highly anticipated third studio album, “MUSIC,” has finally arrived after a five-year wait, and it is a sprawling 30-track collection that tests the boundaries of modern hip-hop. Released on March 14th, 2025, through AWGE and Interscope Records, “MUSIC” is an ambitious project that tests the boundaries of trap/hip-hop and punk elements. It features an impressive lineup of featured artists, including The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, Skepta, Future, Young Thug, and Ty Dolla $ign.
Despite the album’s long wait, listeners, including avid fans and normal hip-hop listeners alike, have mixed feelings about it. The album’s chaotic nature and lack of cohesion can be seen as rather notable drawbacks. Many of the tracks feel unfinished or overly experimental, making the listening experience disjointed.
Critics have praised the album’s thrilling scope and Carti’s vocal prowess, but some have criticized its messy structure and incomprehensible lyricism. Despite these criticisms, “MUSIC” has received generally positive reviews, with a Metacritic score of 77 out of 100.
Many students at Green Level also have mixed feelings about the album.
“The new Carti album is decent since it involves a new style that he usually doesn’t use,” says Green Level Senior Dominic Pucci, “It’s especially seen in songs like KPOP and RADAR. I thought those were pretty interesting. But overall, the album wasn’t good nor bad, it was just alright.”
For fans of Carti’s earlier work, typically from 2014-2018, better known as the “Cash Carti” era, “MUSIC” may feel underwhelming due to its departure from his signature vocal style. However, for those who appreciate experimental trap and punk-infused hip-hop, this album offers a unique listening experience. Overall, “MUSIC” is a flawed yet exciting project that showcases Carti’s willingness to push boundaries in hip-hop.
