One of the most awaited holidays in the entire year is Halloween. From grown ups to little kids, everyone loves the scary costumes and all the candy and pumpkin themed desserts and drinks. So while we are getting closer to October 31st, people all around the world get excited for it. But how is it different in the rest of the world?
We all know how it works in America, hanging out with friends or family, dressing up in your best costume, going trick or treating, going to parties, or watching scary movies. It’s the typical Halloween that everyone knows and loves!
Sophomore JT Wilson said, “My favorite thing to do on Halloween is to walk around with my friends and hang out with them.”
In Brazil, it is not that different. Traditions are to go trick or treating with your friends when you are young, and once you get older you go to parties and watch scary movies, just like in America. The American influence, especially because of movies and TV shows, is seen all throughout different parts of the country.
“We also have the Halloween culture, but because of religious reasons, with Turkey being mostly a Muslim country. So for religious reasons there’s not a lot of celebrations as much as here in the United States.” said sophomore Hasan Tahsin.
He also said that in the biggest cities, such as Istanbul and the capital Ankara, there are more celebrations that resemble the ones in the US, but that because of the religion there are much less parties than here.
In India on the other hand, Halloween is still not one of the biggest holidays, but it is starting to grow there, says sophomore Shayon Chakravarti.
“It’s definitely getting bigger, people are starting to dress up more, go trick or treating and that kind of stuff, start partying more, but it’s still not that big, especially in regions away from the big cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.” Said Chakravarti.
We see that a holiday that is so embedded in American culture and loved by most of the US population, in some countries the sentiment towards Halloween is different. Some countries also celebrate it like America, but many don’t and it is much different than most people would think.
