Fall, also widely known as autumn, is not just a season, it’s a way of life. Its traditions and festivities are untouched by other seasons. The feeling of perfect weather: mild temperature with a crisp breeze and colorful leaves dangling on the trees. The taste of all things apples and pumpkins. And of course, the action-packed weekend of football on the TV in the background.
Senior Alex Staponkus is a big fan of the fall season.
“My favorite season is probably fall,” Staponkus said. “It’s just the best season. I really like the beautiful trees, football season, fall sports, and the holidays are great too.”
Holidays in fall are unrivaled. Halloween, which is on October 31st, is a time for costumes, candy, scares, and carving pumpkins.
Junior Kekoa Perkins noted Halloween as the biggest reason for fall being his favorite season.
“I get free candy,” Perkins said. “I enjoy taking all the candy out the bowls before the kids can get there, and we grub up.”
Thanksgiving is another big holiday in the fall. Thanksgiving always happens the fourth Thursday of November, and festivities include a Thanksgiving feast, time with family, football, and parades.
Fall is the peak season of sports. There is no other season that sees that action like fall does. The action starts with Friday Night Lights, and a full Saturday of college football. Sundays are dedicated to the NFL. In the fall, football is like a religion; however, in fall, baseball swings into the playoffs with the “Fall Classic” being the World Series. The NBA, NHL, and college basketball all kick-off their seasons in the fall, just adding to the amount of sporting event options fans have during fall.
Luke Abell, a senior, is an avid college football and NFL fan, and he calls fall his favorite time of the year.
“Fall is my favorite season because it’s peak college football season and the NFL is on too, but also because of the colors and everything is changing outside.” Abell said.
The heart of the fall season is in the colorfulness of the leaves changing on the trees and a crisp breeze in the air. The weather goes from humid and sticky to mild and light, as if fall is a sigh of relief.
“The weather is great in fall,” Staponkus said, “and the trees are beautiful.”
While some critics of fall might say that fall means school is back in session and is not the best season, however; a new start to the school year is a fresh change, just like fall. The change of leaves, the traditions of holidays, the religion of football and fall sports all add up to show fall’s superiority of other seasons.
