Students, staff, and volunteers came together last week, on Wednesday March 18, to celebrate one of the most inspiring events of the school year – the Special Olympics. This event highlights not only athletic ability, but also teamwork, inclusion, and school spirit.
Held at Green Level’s football stadium, Special Olympics Wake County features schools from around the Triangle, in a variety of activities, including races, relays, and fun skill-based games. Students of all abilities participate, many pair with “buddies” who support and encourage them throughout the day. Events like these are designed to promote inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete and have fun side by side.
One volunteer who worked the event is Green Level sophomore Emma Reynolds. She is dedicated and loves working with and helping students with disabilities. “Working with these kids means a lot. We get to watch them grow not only as a human, but in their abilities, and it’s just really special to be able to create a bond and relationship with them and kind of just watch them grow.” Says Reynolds.
Another volunteer was sophomore Nik Hansen. Nik is interested in learning more about each student and appreciates each student for who they are. “They all have different needs, and it varies every day, and that’s something I love about working with them. Being able to learn what each individual needs every single day and kind of just adjusting to each kid, eventually really shows how much of a relationship you grew with them.” Says Hansen.
Overall, the Special Olympics is highly anticipated and students and staff are beyond excited to watch and participate. The Special Olympics reminds everyone that sports are not just about winning- they’re about participation, encouragement, and celebrating everyone’s abilities.
