Every March, college basketball fans get excited for one of the biggest sporting events of the year, NCAA March Madness. The tournament is a single-elimination competition where 68 college teams compete for the national championship, which makes every game high-pressure and exciting.
What makes March Madness so exciting is its unpredictability. Lower-seeded teams often pull off shocking upsets against top-ranked programs, creating unforgettable “Cinderella stories” that fans love to follow. No matter how strong a team looks on paper, anything can happen once the games begin.
This year, the first round tips off on Thursday, March 18th at 12:15, with TCU facing Ohio State. Around school, both students and staff are already getting caught up in the excitement. The intensity of the tournament is what stands out the most, especially in close match ups.
Mr. Patil said, “The last minute of all the games is most entertaining because they are all in for it and their determination is crazy.”
Patil explained that underdogs are also a big part of the excitement, since unexpected teams can go far in the tournament.
At the same time, there are still strong teams that many people believe could win the championship.
Patil said, “I think either Arizona or Michigan is going to win the whole thing with how strong their teams look.”
March Madness has even made its way into the classroom. Some teachers show games during class, and others organize bracket challenges, giving students a chance to predict winners and compete with friends.
Students are just as interested in the tournament and enjoy the excitement that it brings.
Freshman Joe Kilmartin is rooting for his home team, the University of North Carolina.
Like many fans, he is also focused on the underdog teams and the possibility of surprising runs.
“I also think Miami has a good shot at making it pretty deep into the tournament.” Kilmartin noted.
With different predictions and teams to watch, March Madness continues to bring excitement, competition, and energy throughout the school.
