After a disappointing winter storm, which instead of snow, produced primarily ice, the first week of the semester was an unusual one. The ice plus the threat of black ice kept Wake County Schools, including Green Level, out of school with a pair of remote-learning days, and on top of that, two-hour delays.
With no school being held, as well as all practices and games being cancelled, the Gators found some other ways to spend their time over the unexpected break.
Sophomore JT Wilson, a contributor to the Gator’s Eye, with no math work to do or soccer practices to attend, decided to spend time with his friends playing Fortnite bed-wars. He also trekked in the blustery cold temperatures, to get a blue Fanta slurpee from 7-Eleven.
“I felt like a cave-man,” Wilson said, “it was nice to get some time off to be able to hang out with friends and not worry about schoolwork.”
While Wilson was perched on the couch playing Fortnite, sophomore Hugo Borsari also stayed-in, spending his time watching his favorite Brazilian soccer team, Corinthians.
“We started off playing good, but then after the 30th minute things changed, and the other team scored two goals,” Borsari said about his favorite soccer team’s game. “It made me feel a little angered and upset, but I realized that we didn’t have school tomorrow, and it made me happy again.”
Junior Jashan Gill, on the other hand, decided to spend his snow days, or more so “ice days”, outside. He, along with some other friends, went to Thomas Brooks Park to uncover some sledding hills. Even though, there wasn’t much snow on the ground, Gill found the icy hills to be even more fast, which might not have been the safest idea.
“I hit a very good route down the hill, and I was able to pick up a lot of speed under my sled,” Gill said, “however it was a problem when I sled right into a metal fence covered in ice.”
Gill, who experienced a harsh confrontation with the fence, came to school on Thursday with a black eye and bruised up face.
“I’m alright, it hurt when I hit it, but the main issue was it was really cold out,” said Gill.
While some Gators spent time indoors, shying away from the dangerous ice and cold outside, others braved the conditions to enjoy a rare winter weather day in North Carolina.
If you missed out on the opportunity to enjoy some fun snow day festivities, don’t worry! This weekend, more snow is expected, this time some are calling it one of the largest winter storms in recent North Carolina history. No matter how much snow piles up in Green Level this weekend, snow days are upcoming, and there will be plenty of opportunities for Gators to find makeshift hills to sled, snowboard, and safely enjoy the winter wonderland.
