The annual student-staff basketball game delivered exactly what everyone was hoping for: loud cheers, big plays, and a heavy dose of braggings right on the line. After four quarters of fast-paced action, the staff team pulled away late to secure a 54-43 victory over the students for the fifth year in a row.
Both sides came out energized, trading some baskets, but mostly missed shots for the students. The staff took the lead early on, with David Miller making an opening three within the first seconds standing on the court. Within the first quarter, the staff were debuting their speed and experience.
As the first quarter wrapped up, the students started to find their rhythm. The defense tightened up, and the shots finally started to fall in. At the end of the first eight minute regulation, Senior Nate Harris thought the game was starting to feel more manageable.
“We’re getting beat by ten right now, but we’ll come out hard and strong next time and we’ll be all good,” stated Harris.
By halftime, the staff was still holding a lead and remained firmly in control. Their defense had already set the tone, and their ball movement on offense kept the students struggling to keep up. As the teams headed to the locker rooms, the staff held a comfortable lead and looked composed.
“Our lead feels really good and strong. We let them back in a little bit but we just have to keep moving the ball and continuing with our momentum and we’ll be alright,” said Coach Jones, who was also arguably the most valuable player of the game.
Even with the score slipping away, the students still held their heads high, with a few highlight worthy drives to the basket, and plenty of determination.
When the final buzzer sounded, the staff celebrated their 54-40 win, and maybe enjoyed the moment a little more than they admitted. The students walked off, already talking about next year’s rematch.
Events like these remind everyone why the game is more than just a scoreboard. It’s a chance for the school community to come together, cheer each other on, and enjoy a tradition that blends competition with camaraderie.
