This past Thursday, our Green Level Women’s Lacrosse team celebrated their five seniors on Senior Night. With the festivities and a 17-1 win against Rolesville, the night was truly memorable.
The night was nostalgic for the seniors, Kelly Harmon, Clara Hankinson, Kaitlyn Frederick, Kenia Devoise, Averyl Richardson. Each underclassman picked a senior to make a poster and basket for and honor them with a heartwarming speech. Finally, at halftime each senior was recognized for their accomplishments and their promising future.
Another milestone was reached during the game as Kelly Harmon reached her 100th career point. Harmon was looking to hit that mark before the game, so it was definitely a rewarding moment.
Harmon has been a part of the varsity lacrosse team since she was a freshman and has made incredible contributions to the program. But what stands out the most to her is her first two years on the team.
Harmon said, “My favorite memories from lacrosse at Green Level are from when I got to play with my older sister Kaelyn for my first two years.”
For senior Clara Hankinson, she found joy in the silly traditions the team has.
“I always loved when it’s someone’s birthday at practice, you run at them and silly string them,” said Hankinson. “I was the first person they did it to, so after that it’s become a tradition.
Hankinson has also been a critical part of the program for four years. She has always been an important part of the team’s success, but she has truly come into her own these past few years.
“Throughout my years I’ve adapted to different positions. I started as a defender and now I’m a midfielder, so learning to adapt to change was a big strength that I’ve gained.” Hankinson said.
Hankinson’s versatility isn’t the only thing that has improved over the years; the entire team has seen major growth, especially this past season. It is truly reflected in their record this season with 6 wins and 6 losses, an improvement from last year when they went 3-13 overall.
“I think our team culture really improved this season as opposed to other seasons. We’ve really bonded and we’re playing better than ever,” said Harmon. “There’s definitely something to say about the new coaching staff and how they’ve improved the team culture, and how that has had a huge impact on the field.”
The lady gators will play next on April 21st at Willow Spring High School. Willow is ranked 3rd in the Conference 15 and will surely be a tough opponent.
