This past Thursday, February 19th, the Green Level Track Team went to their State Championships. Multiple different events were competed, but the one that stood out was the 4×800 relay.
Four of the athletes competed in this event representing Green Level and were Sadie Wortman, Kayde Lareau, Lyla Gooch, and Kaylene Bustos.
While racing, they won 1st place with a time of 9:25.58 beating Panther Creek, Apex Friendship, Myers Park, Corinth Holders, West Forsyth, Hough William A, Apex, Broughton, Pinecrest, Green Hope, and Leesville Road. This time also set a new record for Green Level, making this win even more impressive.
The only senior in this race group is Sadie Wortman, is committed to App State, and has been running all four years of high school. Her and the other three in the group have been training very hard for states, and it clearly paid off.
“While training we got divided up into groups so for the two mile and relay I did more distinct training and the other girls did more short distance training and they had some 200’s and some hard 400’s and 500’s.” Wortman says.
Just like any other team sport, they had to build up trust throughout the season in order to succeed, and put faith in each other.
“We worked really hard together and had trust in Katie as a freshman, and she has been running super well so we just put all of our faith into her and we work out together and are always hanging out together so we were able to bond and build trust this way.” Wortman says.
All of the athletes have been very proud of their work and worked really hard throughout the season to get to this point. Not only did they win the race at the state level, but they also broke the school record for indoors as well as beating their outdoor school record.
“We have always been so close but never close enough to actually win it, so I feel like now that we won it, it is so exciting.” Wortman says.
The Green Level 4×800 relay at states was a massive success and finally winning means a huge amount to Sadie, Katie, Lyla, and Kaylene.
