As the Green Level Women’s Soccer team gained their first victory of the season over Felton Grove, with a final score of 2-0, we begin to see history repeat itself.
This year marked an exciting and challenging moment for the students and staff in the Apex area, namely the opening of Felton Grove High School. Opening its doors to freshman and sophomore classes only, Felton Grove is still attempting to find its identity, figure out routines, and learn how to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.
Unlike established high schools with long histories in athletics, Felton Grove is trying to build up their sports programs. Right now, the school is struggling to compete in athletics, especially due to their small population. Teams are compact, and many athletes are having to face much more experienced opponents.
In many ways, its experience mirrors the early years of Green Level, which faced similar growing pains back in the opening in 2019.
“In the beginning of Green Level and the start of sports, it was definitely hard. We obviously only had underclassmen which made it difficult, as all other teams were actually fully developed,” said John Green, Varsity Men’s basketball coach who has been employed at Green Level since the establishment.
Over the seven years since the opening, Green Level has developed strong teams, traditions, and rivalries. Today it is known for athletic dedication and school spirit, but that was not something that happened overnight. Coaches, athletes, families, and fans invested years of effort, and each loss helped build character and determination, all leading to the ultimate athletic success of this school.
“Throughout the years, we not only gained talent from all grade levels, but also learned how to work together as a team and make this into a strong program,” stated Green.
While Felton Grove’s teams may not be topping leaderboards yet, individuals are hoping that the values and cultures developed in these first seasons are lasting, and hoping that this school can endure the same fate Green Level did.
