The Green Level Men’s and Women’s basketball teams have finished up regular season play and are moving forward to the conference championships and state playoffs. Each team has had a successful season, qualifying them for playoffs. What changes now is how the team is preparing for a much more intense environment with sudden death games.
The Men’s varsity team has gone 7-15 on regular season play. But the team has improved incredibly since the beginning of the season, turning their pattern of loss into a much more promising record. Garrett Midkiff, senior captain, knows that the team needs to stay focused now more than ever.
“For the playoffs we dial it in more, it’s a completely different atmosphere. You’re much more locked in for games because it’s win or go home,” said Midkiff.
The team will play at Willow Spring in the first round of the conference tournament this coming Tuesday, February 17th. Willow Spring is an impressive opponent, going 17-6 in regular season play. When facing a tougher opponent, it’s important to prepare and work on your weaknesses.
“We need a stronger presence in the defense,” said Midkiff. “If we play good defense we can beat any team in the state.”
On the women’s side, they will host Jordan on Tuesday in the first round of the conference championship. The Green Level women’s team finished 2nd in the Quad City 7, with a 15-9 record. This season holds special importance for sophomore Reilly Martin.
Martin said, “I’m really close with our seniors right now so it would mean a lot to bring our seniors as far as we can in the playoffs before they have to leave.”
The women’s team also needs to dial in their focus and make sure they are ready to face tougher teams. Martin understands that with each advancement, the team needs to work harder in practice to prepare.
“We need to focus on some of our habits on defense, talking a little more and making sure we all know what we’re doing,” said Martin.
As both teams step into the playoff season, it is important now more than ever to support your Gators. Starting this Tuesday, the boys will be away and the girls will be at home. No matter what game you choose to attend, bring the energy and support!
“I think girl’s sports are always overlooked,” said Martin. “But I think the fans would enjoy how we play, it’s always a fun environment.”
So show up and support! Good luck Gators!
